If you aren’t familiar with the Doom games and if you enjoy first person shooters, make sure to check it out. There are new versions of the game released recently. May not be for everyone though.

First Doom and Doom 2016

DOOM first came out in December 1993. The first soundtrack, written by Bobby Prince (composer), was heavily inspired by Metalica, iconic metal band at the time. The game developers, originally wanted nothing but metal songs, although Bobby Prince at the time thought this type of music wouldn’t sit well (read more). So yeah, the game could have followed a very different direction!

You can find similarity between many Doom’s songs and a couple of songs from Master of Puppets (1986 album). As a matter of fact, “At Doom’s Gate”, song from the level “E1M1: Hangar”, sounds like “Master of Puppets” (song from the album with the same name).

Doom 2016 (also known as Doom 4) featured music from the original Doom game, but in a much more intense and aggressive version, done by Mick Gordon (composer) with contributions by Richard Devine (sound designer). Most Doom 2016 music features horror soundscapes, distorted guitars & synthesizers.

The intensity and dynamics of the music reflect the in-game action as well, something that previous games lacked. The soundtrack is so good that people say you’ll buy a Mick Gordon’s album and you’ll get a free game.
